Given that every internet packet contains IP addresses linking sender and recipient, you might wonder: Is there any hope of achieving any form of unlinkability on the internet? In fact, there is. We will show how mixing internet traffic of many internet users provides anonymity by essentially allowing one to hide in the crowd of others that use the internet at the same time.30 Let’s start by looking at a very basic email-forwarding service, called the Finnish remailer, which provides a basic form of recipient anonymity.
